Middle Level ICT integration

Today we were oriented in using PhET simulations which actually stands for Physical Education Technology. It is an interactive educational tool which is widely used by the teachers and learners for teaching and learning the math, physics, chemistry and other subjects. The tool had at proved to be useful as well as interactive, that is,
  1. this PhET simulation can accommodate the needs and the diverse learning style of the students as they can learn at their own pace and in the way they want to learn.
  2. it enables the students to visualize and interact with the abstract concepts.
  3. makes learning more engaging where learners can explore and experiment safely and efficiently within the virtual environment.
  4. available in online, making it accessible to all learners all around the world regardless of financial status and resources.
There are certain advantages  for using this PhET simulation for teaching and learning:
1.It provides a visual representation of complex ideas and concepts helping the students gain better understanding of the concepts. Moreover it also actively engage the learners through hands on activities.
2.It also model the real world phenomena enabling them to understand the relevancy between the concepts and real world scenarios.
3.There is free access to resources where it enables the students to experiment vitally without having to take risks of damaging and wasting resources.

What is the middle level ICT integration?
Middle level ICT Integration actually means the use of the ICT technologies to create the instructional simulations mainly to aid the teachers teaching as well as the students learning making it engaging and motivating to learn. ICT at this level is used mainly to address the learning needs of the students as well as the goals of the education.    it had made the teaching and learning both easier and convenient  for teachers as well as students where, through ICT they are able to create simulations and the the learning activities with clear instructions and made it accessible to all the learners anytime and anywhere. subsequently, it had also helped the teachers to keep record of the assessment which enable the learners to check the progress of their learning. For instance the use of ICT tolls such as PhET had made it convenient for the teachers to teach the students and the learners to learn freely without having to waste any resources. moreover, this tool helps in meeting the needs of every learners.

Importance:
1.integrating ICT in the lessons  can greatly engage and motivate the students to learn as it had got the abilities to make the lessons enjoyable and relevant to their everyday lives like presentations, digital games and interactive videos.
2.through ICT integrations, teacher can tailor the instructions and activities that suits the need as well as the preferences of the students . Furthermore, ICT facilitates the communication between the teacher and the students though online forums such as emails and other messaging apps.
3.it provides range information, knowledge and skills to the tutors and learners beyond the traditional method of learning and  teaching such as use of textbooks. moreover it makes more engagement and interactive session  whereby enable students to understand the complex concepts more easily.

 Lesson Plan

Subject: Math

Class: IV

Chapter: Unit 3, chapter 1

Topic: Number line: Integers

Activity: Exploring Integers on the Number line

Objectives

By the end of the lessons, student should be able to,

1.       identify the position of integers correctly on a number line without help from peers (Cognitive).

2.        express their thoughts and opinions about relevance of number line integers in real-life situations (affective).

3.       participate in PhET simulation activities actively without help from teachers (Psychomotor).

Teaching Learning Materials: Laptops, computers and mobile phones with access to PhET simulation.

Lesson introduction:

·         Begin the lesson by asking students if they have ever heard of or worked with number lines before. Prompt them to share their prior knowledge and experiences.

·         Introduce the concept of number line integers, explaining that they represent positive and negative whole numbers and zero on a line.

·         Share real-life examples where understanding integers is important, such as temperature, money, and positions on a coordinate plane.

Lesson Development:

·         Demonstrate on how to use PhET simulations to explore integers on the number line. Explain the different features and tools available in the simulation.

·         Guide students through a step-by-step exploration of the number line using the simulations. Start with simple examples and gradually increase the complexity.

·         Encourage student to actively participate by placing integers on the number line, adjusting values, and observing changes in absolute values.

·         Facilitate class discussions to deepen understanding, asking questions like “what happens when we move to the right or left on the number line?” Or “how can we determine the absolute value of an integer?”

 Activity: Group Work

Purpose:  to explore integers on the number line and know their positions using PhET simulations.

Instructions:

v  Use the Google engine and type in phet.colardo.edu

v  Click on simulations and then select all Sims.

v  Click on the subject that you are going to learn, for our case its math, so select math.

v  Then select “Number line: Integers ”

Click the play button

Click on the picture shown above in the rectangle and drag above into the ocean picture.

Read the position of man, fish and taut in the diagram. Should notice the different signs and its positions.

During the PhET simulations on number line integers, student should solve those questions in a group:

1.       Can you place the integer -5 on the number line? How about 3?

2.      What happens when you move to the right or left or up and down on the number line? How does it       relate to positive and negative values?

3.       Can you identify the absolute value of -8? How about 10?

4.      What happens to absolute value of an integer when you move it further away from zero on the number line?

5.      How can you represent the concept of zero on the number line? What does it mean in terms of positive and negative values?

 Follow up:

After completion of the exploration and discussing the questions in a group, ask each group member to present their discussions and finding to the whole class. During their presentation teacher shall assess their level of understanding, supplement, and provide necessary feedbacks and corrections.

Lesson closure:

v  Summarize the key concepts covered in the lesson, emphasizing the importance of understanding number line integers and their relevance in real-life situations.

v  Encourage student to continue exploring number line integers independently or with help of the PhET simulations.

v  Assign practice exercises or activities to reinforce the concepts learned during the lesson.
